The Forsyth Library Archives and Special Collections hold a large number of materials from the personal collection of archaeologist Dr. George Sternberg. One of the most sought-after collections is this series of photo albums and film negatives taken by Dr. Sternberg during his numerous archaeological digs from 1910s through the 1950s. They are significant because these images serve as both a primary source for Sternberg’s paleontological discoveries and as a source for the history of Fort Hays State University. The Sternberg Photo Albums 1~8, in particular, are a major priority item for digitization given their fragility and high patron demand. Iconic images of the fossilized Xyphactinus (Portheus and Gillicus), the famed “fish within a fish,” are featured in this collection. Also included are images of Plesiosaurs, Mosasaurs, and mammoth fossils.
